Annual Report for 2017-2018

Area Secretary's Report

David Lua, AS 2017-2018

1. Specific Goals during my term

1. To organize and coordinate meetings of Area Council and AEOs;
2. To assist AP in communicating with the Regions within the Area;
3. To encourage greater communication of RDs and ASDs;
4. To assist in strengthening the Area;
5. To assist in improving corporate governance

2. Achievement of Specific Objectives during this reporting period

1. ACM 2017 was successfully held on 21 Jul 2017 at Empress Hotel, Chiangmai, Thailand during the Area Convention;
2. MYM 2017 was successfully convened from 3-4 Dec 2017 at Airport Hotel, Gimpo, South Korea;
3. An AEO GTM Meeting on 31 Oct 2017 was successfully convened;
4. An AEO Meeting was successfully held on 16 Mar 2018 during the APAY Exco Meeting.
5. Assisted in extension efforts in Cambodia and China.

3. Activities undertaken during this reporting period

1. Notices of meetings and call for reports were duly sent out;
2. Minutes of ACM and MYM were duly prepared;
3. Together with AP Tung-ming Hsia, AT James Kong, ASD-PR Andy Fu, DG-SMIT David Wong and APAY GS Nam Boo Won, we visited China National Council of YMCAs, Shanghai YMCA and Nanjing YMCA and Y’s Men in these two YMCAs to better understand Y’s Men activities in these two cities with a view to understanding the obstacles for China Y’s Men’s Clubs’ membership in YMI;
4. Visited Cambodia YMCA together with AP Tung-ming Hsiao, IPAP Edward Ong and Tainan YMCA President Donald Wu with a view of forming a Y’s Men’s Club under Mr Wu’s company’s CSR activities in Cambodia.
5. Undertook review of YES New Practice and Area Financial Policy and Procedures.

4. Future Activities planned

1. My term as Area Secretary ends on 30 Jun 2018.
2. Will carry on with extension in Cambodia and China.

5. Challenges

As in past years, responses from RDs and ASDs have been slow in coming. Incoming AS needs to follow up with requests for submission of Constitutions from the Regions.

6. Additional Comments

My thanks and appreciation to AP Tung-ming Hsiao for the privilege of serving as Area Secretary for the 2 terms from 2016 to 2018.

7. Motion to be considered by ACM

Asia Pacific Alliance of YMCA is an important platform for interaction with leaders of YMCAs in Asia Pacific Area. AEOs and ASD-Extension should be encouraged to participate in its annual meeting held in Hong Kong and host a joint meeting of Y’s Men and YMCA to discuss and develop matters of mutual interests.
