Report Date: 20 May 2022
Asaba Shunichiro, Chair of SongFest Project of Asia Pacific Area 2021-2022

SongFest Project Summary Update

  The SongFest project aims at enlivening and rejuvinating the Y’s movement in ASP Area with music playing a catalytic role. The project consists of five activities;

1) Add more Y’s Men Original Songs, 2) ASP Songbook, 3) Musical Y’s Men Roster, 4) Showtime on YouTube and 5) Share new initiatives and ideas.

The following is a brief update.

  The Area Task Force (ATF) meetings were held on-line every month. The participants representing their regions or the cabinet worked as one team in

finding ways to bring more music into the Y’s culture, while singing and listening to songs introduced by various members. The ATF regular members are well-known

in the Area, so they are listed below only by name alphabetically;

  Shunichiro Asaba, Mongkol Chayasirisobhon, Tetsuya Itamura, Desmond Lee,

  Henry Lee, Romeo Limsin, Mark Lin, David Lua, Kayoko Maeda,

 Rachan Maneekarn, Milroy Manuel, Ohno Ben, Kevin Su, Keiko Tonegawa,

 Joan Wong, Marlene Yamada, Yumi Yoshida.

Status of the activities

1) Original Songs

  We have received thus far the following songs. Some are available on YouTube.

   Y’s Way (Asaba/Denza)

   A Tribute to Y’s Men and Women (Lua/Lee)

   Let’s Light Up the Candle (Asaba/Asaba)

   We Are One (Limsin & Lu/Limsin)

   Y’s Men With the World (Limsin/Limsin)

   Happy Faces (Limsin/Limsin)

   Y’s Mennette Hymn (Limsin/Limsin)

   S-M-I-T A Place You Can Belong (Cheah/Village People)

   Centennial Y’s Men (Lee/Lee)

2) ASP Songbook project

  The Songbook, digitally compile, will consist of four chapters divided by categories;

  Chapter 1: YM Original Songs (new and some from the 1980 Songbook)

  Chapter 2: Songs composed by YM

  Chapter 3: Songs from the ASP countries we all can learn

  Chapter 4: Other songs (YMCA songs, hymns, famous songs of other Areas)

  Each song will be presented as a sheet music with lyrics in English or Roman alphabet. Copyright status is reviewed for all the songs.

The youth reps agreed to design the cover page. We aim to have the first draft by end June.

3) Roster of musical Y’s Men

  The Roster currently has twenty-six members from the Area with various musical gifts. It is renewable and should be shared and used by the regions

to brighten up the activities and attract potential members.

4) Showtime and 5) new initiatives

  To promote the movement, regions and districts are encouraged to share their activities with others.

Pending issues

  Presentation/booth of the project and idea to sell commemoration goods during the Celebration in November.

  Lastly, through the experience of monthly meetings, some members felt that similar on-line cross-regional theme-based gatherings could be studied

as a new way to enhance the Y’s movement.
