YMI Liaison to YMCA

Report Date: 5 May 2022
Yamada Kohei, ASD-YMI Liaison to YMCA of Asia Pacific Area 2021-2022

1. Share what you consider to be the achievements/highlights of the Region and the Area

Communication with Myanmar and Indonesia was established. Due to the effort by the Southeast Asia Region, the Malang YMC was chartered after the long period of no Y's Men movement in Indonesia.

After 4 years of continuing communication in Japan (YMCAs in Japan, YMI Japan East and YMI Japan West) we made a new project, called the Youth Action in SDGs. We initiated supporting 10 small projects from youth groups within YMCA and ourtside YMCA. This is the first tie for both YMCA and YMI to invest time and money (about 20,000 USD in total from three parties) for developing youth actions in many parts of the country. This model could be introduced to many regions in the ASP Area as one of the model project in partnership.

2. Membership and Financial Targets & Achievements(as may be applicable)

We tried to raise more fund for Myanmar, but I have not heard the total amount from member countries.

3. Outline specific objectives/actions you are proposing for 2022-23

We will continue the Youth Action in 2023 in Japan and evaluate the project. We will then decide how we could continue toward 2023-2024.

We would like to encourage the communication with Myanmar by supporting IDPs together with Myanmar YMCA and YMCs.

4. Indicate topics needing Area or International attention

Myanmar situation continuously been very difficult. Gradually our attention tends to go to the Ukraine issue even though the situation in Myanmar is very difficult due to lack of financial support. We need to keep our assistance ongoing. Also the newly chartered YMCs in Myanmar need to be guided and encouraged by the other members in the Area.

5. Additional Comments, if any

It was 2021-22 term when we started fundraising for Myanmar in the Asia Pacific Area. I do not know how it went in total. The needs have been changing and recently Myanmar YMCA would like to support IDPs near Thai Boarder area through and with the Chiang Mai YMCA. This project should be agreed by key leaders of the Asia Pacific Area.
